Raja Yoga: Formation, support and affliction
Connections between angular and trinal houses, four types of condition, and how interference and planetary periods affect a combination's expression.
In this article
It explores how inspiration becomes action
Trine houses 1, 5 and 9 relate to personal direction, creativity and meaning; angular houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 relate to practical action. When their lords form the prescribed relationships, ability and a direction worth pursuing gain support in action.
It concerns both accomplishing something and whether doing so uses one’s talents and brings fulfillment. Wealth, income, and social status each have their own assessment factors.
House lords and connections forming the combination
The main formation methods include mutual reception, occupation of the same sign, and full mutual planetary aspects between angular and trine lords, as well as angular lords in trine houses and trine lords in angular houses under the relevant conditions. Assessment begins with these actual relationships, then considers the participating planets’ condition.
For some Ascendants, one planet rules both an angle and a trine. For example, Saturn rules 9/10 for Taurus Ascendant, Mars rules 5/10 for Cancer Ascendant, and Saturn rules 4/5 for Libra Ascendant. Even with the lordships that qualify it as a Yogakaraka, the planet must still meet the placement or connection conditions before a specific combination can be assessed.
Four states
Stainless: formed by suitable angular and trinal lords and any permitted associated house lords, without an effective influence from interfering house lords.
Flawed: a participating planet also rules houses 3, 6 or 11, so support and constraint come from the same planet.
Ruined: a stronger interfering house lord occupies the same sign as a participating planet and overrides it according to the house-lord hierarchy.
Stained: a full planetary aspect from elsewhere causes harm.
For planets in the same sign, compare their house-rulership hierarchy; for external aspects, assess the strength of the relevant influence.
Why the eleventh house can bring both gains and interference
Lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are treated here as disruptive specifically in relation to the direction discussed by Raja Yoga. The 3rd house's particular interests, the 6th house's obligations, and the 11th house's pursuit of recognition and group goals may crowd out genuine creativity and life's direction.
For example, someone may earn income by meeting social demand while gradually moving away from what they truly want to do. Earnings are increasing, but personal direction is also being constrained; both changes need to be understood.
Relevant planetary periods and life themes
A combination's formation shows how support for action is obtained; its condition shows what affects that support. Major periods then help identify when these conditions become more prominent. Career discussions also consider the specific configurations associated with that field.
For example, if creative work receives support but is also constrained by many daily tasks, examine where the burden comes from, when it increases and whether the creative work still has room to continue. The combination’s effects unfold through these specific relationships.
