Major periods and subperiods: Vimshottari’s time levels

Major periods, subperiods and finer timing levels, and how an experience connects with the stages before and after it.

Start with an area to discuss

First use the natal chart or relevant divisional chart to identify the matters involved, then establish the major-period lord’s role in that area. Natural significations, house duties, actual placement and connections together determine which themes can be discussed for that major period.

For example, when discussing changes in resources, first examine whether the major-period lord participates in acquiring, preserving or losing resources, then how the subperiod supports or activates those matters.

Major periods and subperiods have different roles

Maha defines the scope of an entire period; Antar arranges the conditions under which events take shape within that scope, providing their general description and quality. The same subperiod planet therefore serves different purposes under different major periods.

Follow one matter through: what the major-period ruler is responsible for, how the subperiod brings results into being, sustains or separates them, and what additional conditions arise during this time. The two period rulers connect through their actual responsibilities.

How five levels of timing unfold

The final three levels correspond in turn to intensified desire and action, the convergence of immediate conditions, and actual events and details. They unfold within the scope set by the major and subperiods.

The level of detail needed depends on the question, input precision and method used. Many questions about a life phase can first be explained through major periods and subperiods, with shorter intervals examined as needed.

Relate successive subperiods to lived experience

Study, relocation, entering a relationship, and establishing stable work may span several subperiods. Skills, responsibilities, and pressures accumulated in one stage continue into the next.

Consider a hypothetical learning process: repeated training in one phase, a job opportunity in the next, and management responsibilities afterward. Each phase introduces new conditions while building on earlier effort.

Start with your current age and phase

120 years is the full cycle. In practice, a reading usually begins by identifying the current major period, then examining the relevant subperiods and their transitions. Readings extending more than a decade ahead should focus on broad phase themes; specific near-term events require a clearer area of inquiry and input conditions.

If a period brings career progress but relationship strain, the two areas should be explained separately. Calling the entire experience “good fortune” or “bad fortune” obscures the specific differences between life areas.
