Whole-sign houses and Campanus cusps: reading context and specific subjects together

What whole-sign houses, Campanus cusps, and divisional-chart cusps each represent.

In this article

Whole-sign houses establish the context in which matters unfold

Suppose the ascendant is at 28° Aries. All of Aries is still the first house, Taurus is the second, and so on. A planet in Cancer is in the fourth whole-sign house from the ascendant. An ascendant near the end of a sign does not shrink the first house to the final 2°.

Whole-sign houses provide domains and context. In an initial divisional-chart reading, relevant planets in houses 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10 generally have more scope for action; those in 2, 3, and 11 often require sustained effort or responsibility; those in 6, 8, and 12 require further examination of costs such as obstacles, change, and loss.

The cusp points to specific subjects within this area

Campanus calculates specific degrees from spatial relationships at the birthplace. In this site’s house method, these points are Bhava centers overlaid on whole-sign houses: the fourth-house cusp can be used to examine the mother, home or property, and the seventh-house cusp for specific people such as a partner.

A house cusp may fall in a differently numbered whole-sign house. For example, if the fourth cusp falls in the third whole-sign house, reading the fourth cusp still concerns home; its placement in the third whole-sign house adds the setting in which matters unfold. It does not rename the third whole-sign house as the fourth.

Numbers may not appear in sequence in divisional charts

Divisional charts remap positions within the original signs according to defined rules. Cusps can also enter divisional charts through the corresponding rules, so the original twelve specific points may spread out or coincide, and their numbering no longer follows the visual sequence.

To identify an important house-cusp lord, find the ruler of the sign the cusp actually occupies. To identify the ascendant lord, find the ruler of the ascendant in the current divisional chart. Substituting the “7th whole-sign house lord” for the “7th cusp lord” may select the wrong object of analysis from the very first step.

How different techniques use houses

Raja Yoga and planetary exchanges identify combinations using whole-sign house lords. Divisional-chart topics may use whole-sign context, cusps and natural significators together. First identify the technique in use, then select the fields it requires. This explains why one article uses cusps while another does not.

Even an empty house can be examined through its ruler and relevant significators. Several house cusps in the same sign indicate different subjects in similar environments; each retains its identity through its cusp number.
