Retrograde: apparent planetary motion and traditional interpretation
The observational meaning of retrograde motion and its interpretation across planets, cycles and life themes.
In this article
Apparent motion as seen from Earth
Retrograde motion is a change in a celestial body's apparent movement relative to the background as observed from Earth. It records the observed direction of movement and can appear in both birth charts and current transits.
Natal retrograde motion and a retrograde transit during a particular period belong to different time layers. Specify which you mean before discussing them.
Planets, cycles and the area in question
Retrograde motion can be considered when assessing strength or condition, but you still need to examine which planet is involved, its responsibilities, its placement and its connections. The word “retrograde” alone cannot explain the full picture of work, relationships or communication.
Mercury, Venus and Mars have their own cycles and traditional significations. Interpreting retrograde motion requires considering the particular planet and the matters in which it is involved.
Understand it in your current context
A discussion of a specific retrograde can begin with current miscommunication, repeated revisions or relationship changes, then compare these with the relevant planet's responsibilities, natal conditions and current period.
