The Sun: wholeness, direction, and responsibility
The Sun’s confidence comes from recognizing the contribution one can make. This is distinct from the Moon’s story of identity, the person represented by the first house, and the achievements of the tenth house.

Sarva Atman: A whole, acting self
The Sun’s traditional function of selfhood is called Sarva Atman, understood in terms of wholeness of being and self-directed purpose. It concerns whether people trust their ability to contribute, can organize action around important goals, and are willing to take responsibility for their choices.
This confidence differs from needing constant reassurance from others. Someone may hold no prominent position yet maintain a steady direction in professional or family responsibilities; another may have high social standing yet constantly fear they are not good enough.
Natural significations, rulership and cycles
The Sun relates to self-directed purpose, confidence, and responsibility, and traditionally signifies the father and authority. Its specific role develops through its house rulership, placement, and condition.

How the Sun and Moon organize the self together
The Moon organizes experiences, feelings and memories into a story of “who I am,” while the Sun emphasizes what one identifies with now and how one is ready to act. Past stories may support action, or repeatedly limit a person through old impressions.
A hypothetical scenario: after one failure, someone feels incapable whenever a similar opportunity arises. The Moon’s perspective helps explain the involvement of memory and feelings; the Sun’s perspective asks what abilities are actually available now and whether the person is willing to take responsibility for a new choice.
Why it is classified as a cruel planet
The Sun often demands giving up other desires for a more important goal. Holding a position may mean making decisions, facing opposition, or relinquishing some comfort, bringing sacrifice and pressure into the achievement of results.
With sufficient capacity and support, the Sun can help bring important goals into reality. When afflicted, self-doubt, excessive defense of one’s identity, or difficulty accepting feedback may make action harder.
Natural functions and house-ruler responsibilities
The Sun rules only Leo, but takes responsibility for different areas under different ascendants: the first house for Leo, the fifth for Aries, and the eleventh for Libra. Its function of an integrated self remains unchanged, while the specific life tasks it carries change.
The Sun’s house rulerships, actual placement, dignity, and connections together describe how it participates in life. The chart ruler, determined by rulership of the Ascendant, adds further information about the individual’s path.
