Lunar mansion positions and ranges
Hasta is the 13th lunar mansion, spanning 160°00′ to 173°20′ in Dhruva equatorial degrees. Each mansion spans 13°20′. The starting point belongs to this mansion; reaching the endpoint marks entry into the next.
Here, Dhruva degrees use planetary right ascension and the Galactic Center as references. Signs and divisional charts use tropical ecliptic longitude. Use the corresponding values when consulting tables.
Four Padas
Hasta is divided into four Padas of 3°20′ each. The table below lists their corresponding Dhruva equatorial intervals.
| Subdivisions within a mansion | Dhruva equatorial range |
|---|---|
| Section 1 | 160°00′—163°20′ |
| Section 2 | 163°20′—166°40′ |
| Section 3 | 166°40′—170°00′ |
| Section 4 | 170°00′—173°20′ |
Mansion ruler Moon and the first major period
Vimshottari uses the natal Moon's lunar mansion to determine the starting planetary ruler. With the Moon in Hasta, the sequence begins with the Moon's major period, whose full duration is 10 years. The balance remaining at birth depends on the proportion of the mansion the Moon has already traversed.
For example, when the Moon is at this mansion’s midpoint of 166°40′, half remains, corresponding to 5 cycle years. Actual Gregorian dates are then converted using the birth moment and the adopted year length.
The Moon, mansion lord and natal conditions
The Moon relates to feeling, receptivity, adaptation and daily rhythms. Its lunar mansion position also determines the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha.
The lord of this mansion is also the Moon, so the Moon’s house, condition and connections inform both personal experience and the themes of the first period.
When the Moon is near a boundary, differences in birth time and lunar mansion coordinates have a greater effect on the fraction elapsed within the mansion, and may even change the starting dasha lord. When comparing timelines, also check the initial balance and year-length setting.
