The first house: body, nature and life path
The first house describes who is acting and what they seek to embody. Its emphasis differs from the tenth house's achievements and the Sun's function of self.

Start with “Who am I?”
The first house concerns the body, personality, abilities and life path. This path includes the talents a person brings into the world, how they actively participate and what makes them feel they are becoming themselves. It is broader than a set of appearance keywords and more fundamental than a job title.
The ascendant is the intersection of the local eastern horizon and the ecliptic. Counting whole-sign houses from its tropical sign produces the twelve-house relationships used in this library; birth time and place therefore affect the first house and the identity of each house lord.
The first and tenth houses: calling and achievement
Identifying with research, teaching or creative work describes a direction in life; achievement and public responsibility within it belong to the tenth house. The two may support each other, but can also diverge: work may be highly successful while moving further from the life one wanted.
When reading career questions, first understand the person’s qualities and abilities, then examine how those abilities become a social contribution. Inferring nature solely from a job title, or achievement solely from interests, skips an important layer of assessment.
Where the chart ruler carries the starting point
The ruler of the first house is the chart ruler. Its actual house placement shows which affairs closely involve the person; dignity and condition describe how they participate. For example, people with Mars as chart ruler may emphasize building, competition or managing complex change, depending on its environment.
Planets in the first house also contribute to personal expression. The chart ruler is determined by the ascendant's rulership, while the Sun offers a view of the integrated function of self. They may be the same planet or play separate roles.
Separate identity from temporary circumstances
Consider a hypothetical career choice: a researcher temporarily takes an administrative role and performs well but wants to return to research. The first house focuses more on abilities and directions the person identifies with, while the tenth explains how their actual role produces results.
Consider personal direction alongside real-world roles to explore which abilities are worth developing and how current work can accommodate them.
